‘Preparing for the Unexpected’ the latest peer to peer resource created by the Scottish Dementia Alumni group

The Scottish Dementia Alumni are thrilled to be launching their third publication on Wednesday 17th November, Dementia and Preparing for the Unexpected.

Funded by the Life Changes Trust, the project has been completed over around eight months in 2021.

The project grew from a need for information and resources and the feeling of freedom that comes with preparedness.

We asked people living with dementia all over Scotland what they are concerned about, how they prepare and what resources they can share.

Some of the responses were surprising, because we were expecting mostly practical information but it makes complete sense that resilience and emotional preparedness is vitally important.

‘It’s nearly winter and I’m stocking up my cupboards. People prepare in different ways, like filling up the log store, battening down the hatches! If you prepare, you can get on with living your life. When you have dementia, it can really throw you, when something unexpected happens.’
Agnes Houston MBE

‘Expect the unexpected, your life can change in an instant!’ Martin Robertson BA(Hons) BSc(Open)

‘I like things to be local, transport is unpredictable here, and when the weather comes in, I feel responsible to be prepared.’ Nancy McAdam BEM

‘An unexpected hospital trip can be better with a packed bag. There are things we can do to prevent slips and falls like checking footwear and carpets.’ Dr James McKillop MBE
