THRED focus on improving local, regional and national transport systems to make them accessible and inclusive for people living with dementia and their carers.
We will seek to continue to influence transport providers, governing bodies, British Transport Police and other associated transport organisations using the input and experiences of people living with dementia and their carers.
The objective is to develop a national representative voice on transport challenges for people with dementia and their carers and to promote improvements developed by the national group.
We anticipate meeting monthly will welcome people living with dementia and their carers,
We will recruit from the Merseyside area during the first stage of developing the group but welcome members from other groups across the country to input to our development
We will look to engage online and through organised events with other DEEP groups across the country.
Our mission is to drive metamorphosis and sustainable improvements of customer experience in the transport industry to improve quality of life, well-being, empowerment, and social inclusion experienced by people affected by dementia, other hidden disabilities and their carers.
By metamorphosis, we mean a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one by bringing a permanent change in attitudes and systems which result in a substantial change for the better in the lives of all people living with hidden disabilities and their carers.
By sustainable, we mean that through appropriate bespoke training the benefits will come from staff being trained and gaining the confidence and experience of how to deal with all people living with dementia and other hidden disabilities can be continued in the long term.
Our vision is to prevent social isolation by empowering people living with dementia and other hidden disabilities to use public and private transport to get out and about in the community and to be able to live good quality lives and receive the right support when they need it.

Route to independence
“Hello to all our fellow peers and their carers. We at thred are very excited to be working on our latest Dementia Enquirers project, ‘Route to Independence’. We want to explore how people living with dementia can continue to travel independently following a diagnosis. At thred, we fully understand the importance of a person’s independence. We recognise the link between a person being able to travel when they want to, as opposed to when they have to. The impact of a good transport system and a person’s health. For too long the benefits of health and transport going hand in hand have been ignored; that’s why we want to highlight the benefits. We will be looking at why so many of our peers living with dementia are reluctant to use public transport. We want to understand the barriers and what would help build their confidence to travel, because we are fully aware that social isolation is a killer. Just because a person has dementia should not exclude them from being an active member of society. That is why as part of our project, Paul and Tommy will lead meaningful discussions with train/bus/airport organisations to gather information that will provide part of the outcomes for the project.
We will be using a short survey to help gather information. We will be hosting Twitter and a Zoom session for people living with dementia on planning and organising journeys to gather information and ideas too.
We want to consult with DEEP Groups. Please find further details and the survey link on our page on the DEEP website. We aim to produce a simple guide from planning your journey through to destination. Thank you, Paul and Tommy”
