“I went into the Army in 1955. Demobbed in 1957, I left the Army.
In my car, driving around our village, I saw a beautiful, very beautiful young
lady at different places around in the village of Woodingdean.
She had lovely curly hair. I saw her several times, I longed to speak, but never
got the chance. Then one day, thanks to God, all the boys and all the girls, our
gang, were getting ready for a weekend to go for a motorbike racing meeting
at Brands Hatch. Everybody paired up, leaving the two of us standing there on
our own. I just said, “would you like to come with me to the race meeting, I
would be very pleased to take you”. She said “yes please, thank you”. True
Story. Then I said “what is your name?”. She just said “Thelma”. We arranged
where to meet, time and day, and off we went. She was very upset at the end
of the evening as I didn’t kiss her good night.”
